History of the National Forest
The Sierra National Forest has a rich history that dates all the way back to the first inhabitants of California, the indigenous tribes. Later, early European settlers during the period of exploration would camp beneath its ancient giant sequoias and explore its diverse terrain. Its varied landscape consists of adaptive flora and fauna that is unique due to volcanic activities which have impacted the local scenery and geology for thousands of years. The magnificent reaches of the forest also play an integral role in influencing natural history as it extends across three life zones created by changes in elevation. Today, this national forest is an outdoor paradise with endless opportunities to explore and discover some of California’s hidden jewels.

Best Hikes in the Sierra National Forest
Rancheria Falls Trail
If you’re looking for a challenging, yet rewarding hike, the Rancheria Falls Trail in California’s glorious Sierra National Forest is an experience like no other. While only six and a half miles roundtrip, the trail is rated moderate-to-difficult because of conditions such as loose gravel and elevation changes. The trailhead is just off Highway 168 near Shaver Lake and as you make your way up, the terrain grows increasingly rocky with sweeping views of rock outcroppings and pine forest. After continuous switchbacks over granite boulders and up gradual elevations, you’ll eventually come face to face with cascading waterfalls within a lush meadow setting. It’s just easy enough to tackle in a day, but the breathtaking views along the way make it feel anything but short!
Dinkey Lakes Trail to Cliff Lake
Taking a hike on the Dinkey Lakes Trail is an experience like no other. Stretching 10 miles in length, this trail provides perfect conditions and terrain for hikers of all skill levels. Traversing along moderate elevation, the path to Cliff Lake provides incredible views of the Sierra National Forest and its serene lake waters. Although it can be accessed from multiple points, starting off at Shaver Lake would be ideal since that is the official trailhead. Embark boldly on this picturesque journey and revel in the beauty of uncharted nature.
Stevenson Falls Trail
The Stevenson Falls Trail in the Sierra National Forest is a great place to take a scenic outdoor adventure. This eight mile trail is rather rigorous, with a 3,100 foot elevation gain and plenty of rugged terrain. It is important to pay attention to current weather conditions before heading out, as the snowy summit can make for treacherous footing! But the breathtaking views of Grandview Point, Granite Dome and Red Peak along the way make it worth it, and getting to the top of Red Peak provides one of the most breathtaking panoramas that California has to offer. To get to the trailhead, take Highway 168 east from Clovis until you reach an unnamed road just west of Shaver Lake that heads south. From there, you’ll arrive at a parking area where you can begin your hike. Enjoy your journey!
Indian Pools Trail
The Indian Pools Trail in the Sierra National Forest is a great hiking destination for those looking to inject some nature into their day. The trail offers 4 miles of moderate terrain, and rises around 1400 feet in elevation from its trailhead located near Shaver Lake on HWY 168. Hikers will traverse evergreen and conifer forests as they make their way up towards Indian Pools Falls, where breathtaking views await at the end of the journey. Throughout, hikers can expect changes in conditions and terrain, from rippling rapids to basaltic ridges. I love a hike with some good swimming holes, making this one of the best hikes in the Sierra Forest! So if you’re looking for an adventurous hike with a beautiful finale, consider exploring the Indian Pools Trail situated in the Sierra National Forest.
George Lake Trail
The George Lake Trail in the Sierra National Forest is a 9.7-mile loop that offers hikers the perfect fit of challenge and relaxation. Conditions vary along the path, with terrain ranging from flat, grassy meadows to more rugged areas and an elevation that can reach up to 8,000 feet in some spots. To reach the trailhead, start at Kaiser Pass Road and Dorothy Lake High Sierra Trail – you won’t be disappointed! Not only does this trail provide a remarkable trail experience for both novices and experienced hikers alike, but also stunning views from its peak as well as glimpses into nature’s beauty throughout every step of your journey. The views from the pass and of the lake make this one of the best hikes in the Sierra National Forest.
What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for hiking in the Sierra National Forest varies depending on when in the season you’re going. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana double peak shorts, but you might want to start with a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers.
On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking on all the limestone and granite out there!
Sierra National Forest is a beautiful wilderness that offers fantastic opportunities to experience the great outdoors. From hiking and camping to snowboarding and mountain biking, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
