Although the terrain may be uneven in some places, hiking this trail will definitely be worth it – your reward awaits at its end with views of the contrasting rock formations that make Kodachrome Basin State Park so unique. Wildlife spotting may even be possible along the way if you keep your eyes open!
Shakespeare Arch Trail
Hiking the Shakespeare Arch Trail in Kodachrome Basin State Park is an enjoyable experience for hiking enthusiasts of all amenities. At only 1.8 miles in length, the trail meanders through pleasant terrain with a difficulty level appropriate for most skill levels. With this moderate difficulty comes the joy of spending time outdoors and taking in the sights and sounds of wildlife in its natural habitat. I should note that the famous Shakespeare Arch tumbled during a storm in 2019. However, the trail is still incredible and seeing the span where the arch used to cross is amazing! Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a novice, hiking the Shakespeare Arch Trail is sure to be an experience you won’t forget!
Angel’s Palace Trail
Hiking the Angel’s Palace Trail in Kodachrome Basin State Park is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some beautiful scenery. The trail spans 2.4 miles and is considered to be of moderate difficulty, perfect for hiking aficionados or beginners looking for a challenge. With an easy to follow path, spectacular views from the summit at 6750 feet, and terrain suited to less experienced hikers, this trail makes hiking into a pleasure. Along the route you’re likely to catch sight of some local wildlife as well, such as deer, rabbits, lizards and other gentle native species. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll through some breathtaking landscape or something a bit more demanding, Angel’s Palace Trail definitely has you covered!
Wildlife and Vegetation
Kodachrome Basin State Park is home not only to breathtaking rock formations but also an abundance of wildlife and vegetation. You will find everything from deer and elk grazing in meadows, wild turkeys strutting through forests, and birds flocking overhead as they search for prey. There are also plenty of trees throughout the park including juniper, ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, pinyon pine, oak brush, sagebrush and more—all providing much-needed shade during summer months!
What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for the Kodachrome Basin area of course varies depending on weather. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers. If it’s colder, start with a pair of warm leggings.
On top for hiking or climbing, I start with a tri-blend t shirt, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cool or windy. And if it’s really chilly, my go to is the classic Patagonia nano puff. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking around the sandstone!
