History of the Seashore
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a protected area located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA. These trails vary in difficulty level so no matter your experience level you should have no trouble finding one that fits your needs. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Trail
The hiking trail to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is one of the most iconic trails on the East Coast. Offering incredible views and diverse wildlife, it’s perfect for a weekend hiking adventure. While it’s considered intermediate to advanced in difficulty, there are plenty of easier points along the 8 mile length to take a break. The terrain varies from sand dunes to woodland, so be sure to bring layered clothing for unexpected weather changes. Wildlife throughout your hike may include ospreys, deer, foxes and sea turtles. The variety of wildlife along with the incredible lighthouse make this one of the best hikes at Cape Hatteras. Make sure you have your camera to take maximum advantage of any wildlife photo ops that may come your way!
Open Ponds Trail
For hiking enthusiasts, the Open Ponds Trail at Cape Hatteras National Seashore is an absolute must-see! It should be noted that the trail does vary in difficulty–larger hills with sandy terrain become difficult to traverse for the unprepared hiker. Bodie Island Lighthouse Boardwalk Trail
Hiking the Bodie Island Lighthouse Boardwalk Trail at Cape Hatteras National Seashore is an exciting and rewarding experience. This 1.7-mile, moderate difficulty loop trail allows hikers to traverse a variety of terrain from maritime forests to saltwater marshes, while taking in stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The easy hiking trial presents the perfect opportunity for wildlife-spotting and bird watching, with osprey, heron, and seabirds regularly seen around the area. The perfectly picturesque lighthouse makes this one of the best hikes at Cape Hatteras. All levels of hikers can enjoy the unique coastal experience of hiking to the Bodie Island Lighthouse before taking a leisurely stroll back along the well-maintained wooden path.
What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for Cape Hatteras varies depending on when in the season you’re going. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana Elle shorts, but you might want to start with a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers.
On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and great for trekking around on sand!
