History of the Park
Castlewood Canyon State Park is a picturesque natural area located in Douglas County, Colorado, approximately 30 miles south of Denver. The park encompasses an area of around 2,303 acres and offers visitors a diverse array of geological formations, hiking trails, and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Early History
The history of Castlewood Canyon State Park dates back thousands of years. Native American tribes, including the Arapaho and Cheyenne, inhabited the region long before European settlers arrived. These tribes relied on the natural resources of the area, including the Plum Creek and the abundant wildlife, for sustenance and survival.
The park’s name is derived from Castlewood Dam, which was constructed on Cherry Creek in the late 19th century. The dam was built by the Denver Reservoir and Irrigation Company between 1890 and 1896, with the intention of creating a reservoir to supply water for irrigation and municipal use in the growing city of Denver.
Tragically, on August 3, 1933, Castlewood Dam suffered a catastrophic failure. Heavy rains caused the dam to give way, releasing a torrent of water downstream. The resulting flood wreaked havoc, destroying homes, farmland, and infrastructure in its path. While no lives were lost in the disaster, the damage was significant.
Establishment of the Park
After the failure of the Castlewood Dam, the Denver Water Board acquired the land and surrounding area to prevent future flooding and protect the watershed. Over time, the area was developed into a state park, officially designated as Castlewood Canyon State Park in 1964.
Today, Castlewood Canyon State Park attracts visitors with its unique geological features and scenic beauty. The park is characterized by deep canyons, towering cliffs, and rock formations sculpted by centuries of erosion. In summer, temperatures range from the upper seventies to mid-eighties Fahrenheit during the day. In the evenings temperatures drop quickly and become much cooler – perfect for exploring its miles of trails, many near waterfalls. Winter brings more mild temperatures in the afternoon but can drop dramatically with temperatures often dipping into single digits. During winter months it may snow frequently, so when planning a visit to this state park one should check the weather conditions in advance. Humidity levels remain low throughout most seasons of the year making for ideal outdoor exploration conditions. The Park is home to many different species of animals including mule deer, elk, eagles, hawks, coyotes, foxes and more! The park also features eight different types of fish in its streams such as brown trout and rainbow trout so be sure to bring your fishing pole if you plan on visiting during the warmer months! If you’re looking for an easier hike try taking the Creek Bottom Trail. This route follows along Plum Creek and provides plenty of opportunities to spot wildflowers and bird watch. For more experienced climbers who are eager to test their skills there are several technical routes ranging from 5.7 – 5.10c that can be accessed near the west end parking lot.

At just two and a half miles in length, the trail can easily be completed in a couple of hours. The trail is in great condition and offers plenty of elevation changes throughout its course, providing an engaging experience for hikers of all skill levels. The trailhead is located near the Visitor Center. From there you’ll cross through terrain varying from lush meadows to rocky riverbeds. Once you reach the peak, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the canyon below. The view of the beautiful waterfall makes this one of the best hikes at Castlewood Canyon. Hikers should be sure to take advantage of this unique opportunity to get close to nature!
Rimrock Trail to Creek Trail Loop
The Rimrock Trail to Creek Trail Loop at Castlewood Canyon State Park is a must-hike trail for any level of trail lover. At 5 miles in total length and featuring moderate terrain, the trail takes about 3 – 4 hours to complete. Starting from the trailhead located on the Manor House road parking lot, hikers can expect gradual elevation changes throughout, with stunning views of the surrounding mesas and canyons and boulders galore. There are also designated picnic spots to take a break along the trail. As always, stay on the trail and be prepared with appropriate supplies before you go – you won’t regret it.
Inner Canyon Loop Trail
Hiking the Inner Canyon Loop trail at Castlewood Canyon State Park is a great way to get your heart rate up and enjoy some stunning Colorado views while you’re at it. This trail circles the canyon, boasting a trail length of 4.3 miles and trail conditions ranging from easy to moderate. You’ll traverse terrain of rolling hills, sandy gullies and dense forests as you make your way across the 673 ft elevation differential. The trailhead location is easily accessible near the north end of the park near Franktown and will take you along well-maintained trails with breathtaking views that cross two streams and follow both riverbanks along several spectacular overlooks. The variety of environments and beautiful views along this trail make it one of the best hikes at Castlewood Canyon. With plenty of stunning sights along the trail, Castlewood Canyon State Park has something for every type of hiker.
Lake Gulch Trail
The Lake Gulch Trail at Castlewood Canyon State Park is a great trail for an easy outdoor stroll. Measuring just under 2 miles with fairly easy trail conditions, this is a great way to see the park. The trail takes visitors right into the heart of the canyon along a beautiful creek. It’s a great way to get a feel for the terrain without too much of a time or difficulty commitment. The trailhead is located on the west side of Castle Rock Street and easy to access. All-in-all this trail is a must do if you are visiting the area!
Creek Bottom Trail
Castlewood Canyon State Park is a great destination for an outdoor adventure! The Creek Bottom Trail is the perfect choice for all types of hikers. The trail is about 2.8miles long, and the trailhead is just off Old Denver Highway. The varied terrain as you ascend from the valley floor to the canyon rim makes for some beautiful scenery! It’s well maintained, so don’t worry about too slippery conditions. However, there are occasional elevation changes that can reach up to 200 ft in some areas. You won’t be disappointed by the sweeping sights boasting spectacular views due to the openness of this trail, so make sure to bring your camera and get ready to snap some amazing pictures.
What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for hiking in Castlewood Canyon varies depending on when in the season you’re going. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana double peak shorts, but you might want to start with a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers.
On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking on all the limestone and granite out there!
