What to Know Before You Go
Mount Shasta is located about 25 miles from the city of Weed, and it’s accessible year-round. The hike itself is considered moderate to difficult, so hikers should come prepared with appropriate shoes and clothing for changing temperatures. It’s also important to note that there are several routes up the mountain, ranging from beginner-friendly paths to more challenging hikes with steep inclines and loose rock terrain. If you’re looking for a longer trek, there are also overnight camping options at some of the lower elevations around the base of Mount Shasta.
Of course, it’s always best to check in with park rangers before setting out on any hike — especially if you plan on ascending all the way up the mountain. The rangers can provide you with helpful tips on how to stay safe while navigating your route as well as recommend some hidden gems along the way that you may not have known about otherwise.
The Benefits of Visiting Mount Shasta
Beyond its incredible beauty and countless outdoor activities, another great thing about visiting Mount Shasta is that it offers something different each season. During winter months, visitors can look forward to snowshoeing or skiing along some of the quieter trails away from the base camp area; whereas during springtime Mt. Shasta comes alive with blooming wildflowers and lush green foliage surrounding many of its trails. Summertime brings warmer temperatures ideal for long hikes or even rock climbing; and during autumn months visitors will be treated to stunning fall foliage in addition to crisp morning air perfect for camping under starry night skies.

What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for hiking at Mount Shasta varies depending on when in the season you’re going. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana double peak shorts, but you might want to start with a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers.
On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking on all the granite out there!
Mount Shasta truly has something for everyone — whether you’re an experienced hiker looking for a challenge or simply someone who wants to enjoy nature’s beauty without all the physical exertion (although those are great too!).
