Keep that in mind as you explore this area. It’s still considered incredibly sacred to many locals. Be respectful of the land and the people.

Bisti Wings Trail
The Bisti Wings Trail in the Bisti Badlands Wilderness is a true hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. The trail spans about 3 miles, which is doable for most hikers. The terrain is mostly flat and easy to navigate, but some parts can be a bit steep and challenging.
The trailhead is located of NM-371, to Country Road 7295. About a mile down CR 7295 you’ll see signs for tourist parking. It kind of looks like an open field, but it’s the north parking area.
Once you arrive, the views are breathtaking with towering rock formations, whimsical hoodoos, and otherworldly landscapes. The incredible formations on top of the Hoodoos make this one of the best hikes in the Bisti Badlands. Hiking the Bisti Wings Trail is an absolute must for any avid hiker looking to get off the beaten path and explore the natural beauty of New Mexico.
De-Na-Zin Trail
If you’re on the hunt for a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience, look no further than the De-Na-Zin Trail in the Bisti Badlands Wilderness. This trail is a little over 3 miles and is mostly flat hiking through desert washes.
The trailhead can be found off route 7023 which is just off Hwy 371, not too far from the main parking area and the Bisti Badlands Trail trailhead. After following the wash for about a mile you’ll reach a group of incredible hoodoo formations. There’s another wash in that group you can take that leads up to a rim with more amazing rock formations.
As you traverse the sandy and rocky path, you’ll come across striking rock formations and geological wonders that are unique to the region. While the conditions can be challenging, the beauty and captivating experience of hiking the De-Na-Zin Trail make it an adventure worth taking. These amazing hoodoo formations make this one of the best hikes in the Bisti Badlands.
What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for hiking in the Bisti Badlands varies depending on when in the season you’re going. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana double peak shorts, but you might want to start with a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers.
On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking on all the limestone and granite out there!
