Geology of Hawaii

To unfold the natural history of the Big Island of Hawaii, one must look to its geologic roots. Formed by volcanic activity stretching over millions of years, this volcanic archipelago has one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth. Every inch of this lush paradise carries a story from its volcanic past, from the Mauna Loa and Kohala Volcanoes, to the Kīlauea Caldera with its volcanic vents, lava tubes and hot springs.

Geology enthusiasts could explore for days beneath the raw, unspoiled surfaces of Hawaii’s breathtaking scenery to observe volcanic features like spatter cones and cinder cones exhibiting evidence for all stages of volcanic life. These volcanic eruptions leave behind trails that can be studied by future generations so that we may endure in our quest to understand Earth’s natural history.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

One of the must-see attractions on the Big Island is Volcano National Park. Here, visitors have the chance to witness firsthand one of nature’s most impressive phenomena—active volcanoes! From Kilauea—the world’s largest active volcano—to Mauna Loa, visitors can explore these massive geological formations up close and personal. The park also boasts miles upon miles of trails perfect for hiking or camping. There are also several observation decks so you can take in all that volcanic activity from a safe distance.

Beaches and Rainforests

The island also offers plenty of opportunities for beachgoers and nature lovers alike. With over 130 miles of coastline and dozens of pristine white-sand beaches dotting its shores, visitors are sure to find their perfect slice of paradise. Those looking for a more rustic getaway will enjoy exploring the island’s lush rainforest regions, home to hundreds of species native only to Hawaii. Whether it’s sunbathing on Waikoloa Beach or getting up close with local wildlife at Akaka Falls State Park, there’s something here for everyone!

Best Hiking Trails

Kilauea Iki Trail (Hawaii Volcanoes National Park)

Hiking the Kilauea Iki trail on the Big Island of Hawaii is a one-of-a-kind experience! This trail is 4 miles in length and consists of relatively easy terrain, with only minimal elevation changes. It begins at the trailhead near the Thurston Lava Tube, and upon completion, you will have enjoyed some breathtaking views of craters and valleys below. During your hike you may even catch sights of lush ferns and foliage, all brilliant with shades of green from below! And when you’re ready to tackle something more challenging, there are plenty of opportunities for detours and side trips through this same trailhead. The up close walk through dense rainforest makes this one of the best hikes on Hawaii. So what are you waiting for? Take a journey down the Kilauea Iki trail today!

Papakolea Green Sand Beach Trail (Naalehu)

Hiking the Papakolea trail on the Big Island of Hawaii is an amazing experience! This trail is just 2 miles roundtrip, with considerable elevation change, so if you’re up for a challenge, this trail will provide it! The trailhead is located near South Point and as you make your way along the trail you’ll encounter terrain including prehistoric lava fields and cinder cones. Of course, no outdoor adventure would be complete without spectacular views; you’ll be treated to incredible views of the ocean along with valleys dotted with ironwood trees and pockets of vegetation. All that scenery combined with the unique green hue of the sand makes this trail well worth taking!

Pololu Trail  (Kohala Forest Reserve)

The Pololu Trail at the Kohala Forest Reserve is a scenic trail that hiker enthusiasts shouldn’t miss. At 1.8 miles in length, it’s a relatively easy trail to traverse and is great for both novice and experienced hikers. As you make your way up, you’ll experience a variety of terrain including gravel paths and steel ladders to help you ascend steep slopes that reach higher elevations with incredible views as rewards.

On this trail, you’ll find an abundance of endemic flora along the trailside sheltering rare native wildlife as well. Accessible by car off of Highway 270, the trailhead is marked toward the very end of the road before the parking area at about 1525 feet above sea level. The views of this incredible coastline make this one of the best hikes on Hawaii. Stopping here will be worth your while as what waits ahead are some pretty amazing views!

Akaka Falls Trail (Akaka Falls State Park)

Hiking the Akaka Falls trail at Akaka Falls State Park is an adventure worth taking. It’s a moderate trail that is just over half a mile in length, and while it’s not difficult, you’ll want to bring good hiking shoes to conquer the inclines and declines along with the other terrain changes. The trailhead can be found north of Honomu off Highway 220, at the park entrance that’s 486-feet in elevation —so if you’re in search of a challenge or great views, this trail has both!

You’ll climb to rocky ledges and get breathtakingly close to cascading waterfalls that drop as much as 442- feet as you make your ascent. The lush rainforests and amazing view of the waterfall make this one of the best hikes on Hawaii. Once you reach the top after approximately 25 minutes — depending on your pace—you can rest assured knowing no view was better earned.

Captain Cook Monument Trail (Kealakekua Bay State Park)

The trail leading up to the monument of famed explorer Captain Cook at Kealakekua Bay State Park is a challenging but rewarding trail, with a length four and a half miles. The trail consists of moderate to steep inclines, mostly made up of uneven terrain. During certain times of year, sections may be muddy or slippery due to rain so trail conditions should be checked beforehand.

Reaching the trailhead is easy, located just off Highway 11 in Ka’awaloa Flats. As you progress on the trail and ascend into the hills you will be surrounded by an array of sights. From the coastlines that border the bay in crystal blues and greens to rolling green fields dotted with trees as far as eye can see, visibility should not be an issue regardless of time of day or season!

What to Wear

My clothing recommendations for hiking in Hawaii varies depending on when in the season you’re going, and where on the island you are. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana double peak shorts, but you might want to start with  a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold at the higher elevations. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers

On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking in mud or slick rock out there!

With its diverse landscape and array of activities, it’s easy to see why the Big Island is such a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. From exploring breathtaking volcanoes and picturesque beaches to hiking through lush rainforest regions full of native wildlife – there’s something here for everyone! So if you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure in one of nature’s most beautiful settings – look no further than the Big Island! Safe travels!

That’s my list! I hope this helped you plan and get excited for the best hikes on Hawaii! What are your favorite hikes on the island?
