Brief History of the Island
When one thinks of Maui, pristine beaches, tanned surfers, and calm ocean waters may come to mind. It’s hard to imagine that this beautiful tropical island has a deep-rooted history, rich with indigenous tribes and a unique geology. Maui was inhabited by Polynesians as early as 800 AD. They lived in harmony with the land, relying on its bountiful resources to sustain themselves. Fast forward to 1959, when Hawaii became a state, and Maui was quickly designated as one of its four major islands. Today, Maui welcomes millions of visitors every year, drawn in by its breathtaking landscapes and fascinating history.
Geology of Maui
The natural history of Maui is fascinating and full of wonder for all who visit. The Hawaiian island is one of several islands formed by volcanic activity, though not all in the same way. The landscape bears witness to a complex geological activity including cinder cones, lava domes, and many other landforms indicating significant past volcanic activity. For example, in the west you can find a 10,000 ft extinct volcano whose collapsed summit forms the inner harbor at Lahaina. Further inland, craggy terrain decorates the rolling hills throughout much of the island. Geologists will find much to explore on Maui through its natural features that give insight into the islands long and turbulent natural history.
Best Time to Visit
If you’re planning a trip to Maui, Hawaii, you’re likely curious about the weather. The wonderful news is that temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year, with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the 70s. While summer can be a bit warmer and winter a bit cooler, you won’t experience any dramatic shifts. However, the best time to visit is generally between April and May or September and November when the climate is mild, and you can avoid the summer and winter crowds.
As for scenery, don’t expect to see autumn colors or spring rain – Maui’s landscape is lush and green year-round. So grab your sunscreen and hit the beaches, because the weather on Maui is always pristine.
One thing that’s really important to note here – while Maui’s average temperatures are mild with little variation, the same can’t be said for the high elevation areas of the island. If you’re planning on hiking up at Haleakala National Park (and you should!), bring warm clothes! We were there in February when it was 75 degrees at the beach, but it snowed on us up in the park!
Wind on the Island
When it comes to the island of Maui, wind patterns play a crucial role in deciding where to visit and when. Understanding the direction and strength of the wind at different times of the year can make or break a day out on the beach or embarking on a hike. Generally speaking, the north and east sides of the island experience stronger and more consistent winds during the summer months, making them ideal for windsurfers and kiteboarders.
However, come wintertime, the south and west sides of Maui tend to have the most optimal wind conditions for these sports. And if you’re simply looking to escape the wind altogether and bask in some sunshine, the southwestern coast is the place to be during summertime. So, whether you’re an adventurous thrill-seeker or a laid-back sun-worshipper, knowing the wind patterns on Maui is key to planning the perfect island getaway.
A Variety of Scenic Views and Trails to Explore
Maui offers an array of trails, from easy walks to strenuous hikes. No matter your skill level, you can find something that fits your needs perfectly. In addition to the variety of trails available, many of them offer stunning views that are sure to leave you speechless. From lush rainforests and waterfalls, to breathtaking mountain vistas and panoramic ocean views—you never know what you might come across while exploring Maui’s natural beauty!
Haleakalā National Park is home to some of the most popular trails on the island. The Pipiwai Trail is one of the most beloved hikes on the island because it leads hikers through dense bamboo forest and several waterfalls before ending at Makahiku Falls—a 400-foot waterfall with a swimming hole at its base! For those looking for a more challenging hike, try out the Waimoku Falls Trail, which takes hikers up 1,000 feet over 4 miles before arriving at 400-foot Waimoku Falls!
Those less experienced hikers may want to try out the Kahekili Highway Trail or Sliding Sands Trail—both offer stunning views without being too strenuous! Whatever trail you choose, there’s no doubt that your hike will be filled with awe-inspiring scenery and unforgettable memories!
Waihe’e Ridge Trail (West Maui Forest Reserve Area)
The Waihe’e Ridge trail in Maui is a trail that should be high on the list for any hiker looking for an adventure. At just over 4 miles in length, the trail promises to challenge and reward those willing to take it on. The trail is well maintained – there are some sections of strenuous terrain but the views of bamboo forests, valleys, and waterfalls are stunning.
Although not overly strenuous, a steady elevation change of over 2200 feet is a considerable climb. The trailhead is located at the end of Waihe’e Ridge Road off Kahekili Highway. There’s a small parking area allowing access to cars and smaller vans and trail access right away. If you’re lucky enough to have clear skies, you’ll experience some of the best panoramic views Maui has to offer! The views of waterfalls, lush forests, and bright blue ocean make this one of the best hikes on Maui.
Kapalua Coastal Trail (Lahaina)
Exploring the Kapalua Coastal Trail in Maui is a great way to take in some amazing Hawaiian nature. This trail winds for 3.5 miles through varied and interesting terrain. Much of the trail is flat, with occasional sections of hills or elevations for a bit of variety. The trailhead is located near the resort area and begins on the beach trail where most of the trail follows beside picturesque beaches. Along the journey, one feels surrounded by tropical and lush foliage while also enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean, wildlife, and even an old Hawaiian village. The incredible turquoise ocean and cool rock formations make this one of the best hikes on Maui. By choosing this trail, you are sure to soak up some incredible sights and create lasting memories!
Waimoku Falls via Pipiwai Trail (Haleakala National Park)
Embarking on a hike along Pipiwai Trail in Haleakala National Park to Waimoku Falls is an experience like no other. This trail is about four miles long and requires navigating challenging, ever-changing terrain including stream crossings and vertical ascents. Navigating the trail is relatively straightforward as it follows the northern wall of Haleakala Crater. The path is well marked from the trailhead at Ohe’o Gulch all the way to Waimoku Falls at 1,200 feet elevation.
Along the way, you’ll have stunning views across the crater while winding up and back down through a nature trail dominated by bamboo, towering eucalyptus trees, and beautiful wild orchids. The trail culminates at Waimoku Falls – 400 feet of cascading water – forming a magical finale for an amazing journey.
Nakalele Blowhole Trail (Wailuku)
Hiking the Nakalele Blowhole trail in Wailuku is an experience like no other! Measuring less than 2 miles, this trail features a wide range of conditions and terrains. Beginning at the trailhead near the Nakalele Point sign, you’ll pass through lava fields before ascending about 400 feet of elevation. Despite its moderately challenging conditions, this trail offers up some of the most breathtaking views on Maui. The incredible overlook adjacent to a scenic blowhole gives you that quintessential Hawaii snapshot! For those looking for a moderate yet rewarding short hike on the west side of Maui, the Nakalele trail is a must!
Halemau’u Haleakala Overlook Trail
For a stunning look into Haleakala National Park, few trails offer the same experience as the Halemau’u Haleakala Overlook Trail. This trail is considered a difficult 5 mile roundtrip trail. Visitors start at the trailhead near Holua Cabin, then hook up with the rugged ridge of Halemau’u Trail. The trail has pretty well-maintained pathways and signs to keep hikers on track. Although the trail is well maintained, it quickly elevates up to 8300 feet. Because of the high elevation and large elevation gain, be sure to set aside plenty of time for this trail.
At its most spectacular point, hikers will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across Haleakala National Park, as well as stunning views of Waikamoi Valley and Koolau Gap below. Don’t let the fact that you’re in sunny and warm Maui fool you.. The trails in Haleakala are often cold and windy due to the park’s high elevation. Make sure to pack warm layers for this one, and enjoy the spectacular view!!
What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for hiking in Maui varies depending on when in the season you’re going, and where on the island you are. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana double peak shorts, but you might want to start with a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers.
On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking in mud or slick rock out there!
For those who love spending time in nature and exploring new places, visiting Maui is an absolute must! From lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls to panoramic mountain vistas and breathtaking ocean views—there’s something here for every type of adventurer. So grab your hiking gear and get ready for an unforgettable journey through one of Hawaii’s most beautiful islands! With so much beauty waiting to be discovered, start planning your visit today!
