Safety Considerations
When visiting Big Sur remember that it is an extremely remote location so it’s important that you come prepared with all the right supplies including plenty of water (at least 1 gallon per person per day), food (enough for your entire stay), clothing suitable for changes in weather conditions, and sturdy shoes appropriate for rough terrain. Also keep in mind that cellphone reception is limited so let someone know where you are going before your hike as well as when they should expect to hear from you again upon completion. Finally, be sure to practice Leave No Trace principles while out in nature – leave nothing but footprints!
What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for Big Sur varies depending on weather. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers. If it’s colder, start with a pair of warm leggings.
On top for hiking or climbing, I start with a tri-blend t shirt, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cool or windy. It can also be rainy or damp in Big Sur in the winter and spring, so I always have a rain jacket with me! And if it’s really chilly, my go to is the classic Patagonia nano puff. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking around on any wet rocks!
Big Sur State Park is an amazing place for both experienced hikers and first-timers alike! With its incredible views and diverse wildlife, it’s easy to see why this spot consistently tops California’s list of must-see outdoor destinations. Whether you plan on spending just a few hours there or camping overnight (with proper permits), Big Sur State Park promises an unforgettable experience that will leave you wanting more! So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip now!
As always, please practice Leave No Trace principles when enjoying the outdoors! Check local trail and weather conditions before any hike.
