History of Yant Flat and the Candy Cliffs
The area gets its name from the Yant family, who were early settlers in the region. However, the geological formations found at Yant Flat have been shaped over millions of years. The cliffs and colorful sandstone formations are part of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
Stunning Scenery
The stunning scenery at Yant Flat is the result of various geological processes. The area was once covered by a vast desert, and over time, sediments were deposited and compacted. Subsequent uplift and erosion exposed the layers of sandstone, revealing the vibrant colors and intricate patterns seen today.
Sandstone Formations
The sandstone formations at Yant Flat feature a variety of hues, including shades of red, orange, yellow, white, and pink. The colors are caused by the presence of different minerals and elements in the rock layers, such as iron, manganese, and oxidized metals.
Hiking and Photography
In recent years, Yant Flat has gained popularity as a hiking destination and a photography hotspot. Its remote location and relatively untouched nature make it an appealing place for those seeking solitude and natural beauty. Visitors can explore the area by following hiking trails that wind through the colorful cliffs and offer breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape.
Geology of Yant Flat and Candy Cliffs
The geology of Yant Flat is characterized by colorful sandstone formations and unique rock patterns that have been shaped over millions of years. The area is part of the larger geological region known as the Colorado Plateau, which spans several states in the southwestern United States.
Yant Flat is located within the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, which encompasses the transition zone between the Mojave Desert to the southwest and the Colorado Plateau to the northeast. The sandstone formations at Yant Flat are primarily composed of the Navajo Sandstone, which is a prominent rock unit found throughout the Colorado Plateau.
Jurassic Period
The Navajo Sandstone was deposited during the Jurassic Period, approximately 190 to 180 million years ago, when the area was a vast desert covered by sand dunes. Over time, these sand dunes were buried and compacted, forming the thick layers of sandstone visible today.
Striking Colors and Mineral Deposits
The striking colors seen in the sandstone at Yant Flat are a result of different mineral deposits and weathering processes. Iron oxide (hematite) contributes to the red and orange hues, while manganese oxide creates the purplish colors. Other minerals, such as limonite and goethite, can give rise to yellow and brown shades.
Patterns and Textures
The unique patterns and textures found in the sandstone formations are a result of various geological processes. Erosion caused by wind, water, and freezing-thawing cycles over millions of years has sculpted the rocks into intricate shapes and patterns. The differential weathering of the sandstone layers with varying mineral content has also contributed to the formation of the distinctive cliffs and ridges seen at Yant Flat.
“Brain Rock” Formations
Yant Flat is renowned for its “brain rock” formations, characterized by small-scale convoluted patterns that resemble the folds of a brain. These structures, known as “teepee structures,” result from the shrinkage and cracking of the sandstone during drying and weathering processes.
Overall, the geology of Yant Flat offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient desert landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, showcasing the beauty and complexity of the natural processes that have shaped the area over millions of years.

The trailhead for the Candy Cliffs Trail is located off the Old Highway 91, near the town of Leeds, Utah. The trail is not officially marked, but there are several well-defined paths and social trails created by previous hikers. What to Wear
My clothing recommendations for hiking at Yant Flat, and southern Utah in general varies depending on when in the season you’re going. If you opt for shorts, I like the Prana double peak shorts, but you might want to start with a pair of warm leggings under them if it’s cold. For hiking pants, my go to are the double peak joggers.
On top, for summer hiking I start with a tri-blend t shirt or tank, and then layer on an SPF pullover if it’s warmer outside, or a smartwool pullover if it’s cold or windy. And I usually carried my rain jacket. Finally, my go to hiking shoes are merrell siren sports. They’re comfortable, waterproof, and have Vibram soles which are super grippy, which you’ll appreciate for hiking on all the limestone and granite out there!
Yant Flat is a hidden gem that has captured the hearts of many hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. This rare and incredible natural wonder is worth checking out and has something to offer for everyone. The moderate hike, stunning vistas, abundant wildlife, and photography opportunities make Yant Flat a must-visit destination in the heart of Utah.
